WAWA Arbor Day Celebration - February 21, 2009 PDF Print E-mail

The West Atlanta Watershed Alliance, USDA Forest Service National Wildlife Federation and several partners organized a series of activities in celebration of Arbor Day in Georgia - Saturday, February 21, 2009 between 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM. Activities included facilitated hikes, a presentation on arboriculture and  a performance called the "Trail of Trees".  "Trail of Trees" was created by Tim Wommick, who was inspired to teach people about trees after a visit to Joyce Kilmer National Forest and reading Kilmer's poem, "Trees".  He has toured all over Georgia and the United States and has become known as the modern-day Johnny Appleseed or more simply "The Tree Guy".  Facilitated by this outstanding entertainer, Georgia Forestry Commission sponsors this high energy, engaging, interactive performance for youth of all ages: http://www.treetures.com/Timstrail.htm

WAWA honored at Emory University's 17th annual MLK Community Service Awards Program PDF Print E-mail

On the night of January 22, 2009, WAWA was honored at Emory Universityʼs 17th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Ceremony. The event was sponsored by the Rollins School of Public Health and the Goizueta Business School to recognize and celebrate people and organizations in greater Atlanta whose work exemplifies the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. WAWA was among 8 other local organizations recognized for efforts on behalf of the community.

On Monday January 19, 2009, WAWA facilitated its annual service day commemorating the values and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Opportunities were provided for service learning in the urban forests of southwest Atlanta, and invasive plant species were removed. Assistance was provided from several local organizations. Ecoaddendum, Trees Atlanta, USDA Forest Service, National Park Service, Keeping it Wild and Park Pride served as facilitators and crew chiefs leading native plant identification and preservation, work crews, a children’s activity corner, and guided hikes.

Fulton County Commissioners Honor WAWA for the 2nd year in a row PDF Print E-mail

On November 18, 2008, WAWA was honored for the second year in a row by the Fulton county Board of Commissioners at a recent meeting. WAWA's work with with residents in the Utoy, Sandy and Proctor Creek watersheds and residents was recognized as being exemplary and inspiring. Bruce Morton, Saundi Wilson, Louversia Wiggins and Na"taki Osborne were on hand to accept the proclamation and plaque.

The West Atlanta Watershed’s Winter Solstice Celebration was an urban woods success. The Eco-Winter gathering took place atop Bush Mountain on the Outdoor Activity Center grounds, on the night of December 20, 2008.

Nearly sixty (60) participants enjoyed a guided hike to the hill-top site from the parking lot, through the forest along natural surface trails. Celebrants were of all ages, including family groups, singles and friends. 

Master drummer Adebisi Adeleke performed traditional Yoruba talking drum rhythms from his country of Nigeria. He explained the cultural purpose of each of the three types of talking drums, and involved the audience in the singing of Yoruba chants and songs.
